COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – One man was injured in Colchester on Monday after a camper he was in blew up.
The calls came in at about 3 p.m. for a fire at the Elm Hill Farm property in Colchester.
When crews arrived, they found a camper on the property had already burned to the ground.
They say a man who had been inside told them he lit a cigarette and then the camper blew up.
The cause is unclear and it’s not suspicious, but fire officials say there were several propane tanks near the site.
Colchester Fire Chief Scott Crady says crews worked hard to prevent the fire from spreading.
“These barns are filled with a lot of old wooden objects because it’s not a working farm. We were concerned that this could be a very large fire being it was just far enough away from the structure, and no wind really helped us out a lot,” Crady said.
Officials say the person living in the camper suffered some serious burns and after initially rejecting medical care, did end up going to the hospital.
We are told the Red Cross has been brought in to help after the total loss.
