MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A new report to Vermont lawmakers shows the state is on track to miss its workforce development goals.
It’s no secret Vermont faces big workforce and demographic challenges.
Five years ago, state lawmakers set a goal of 70% of working-age Vermonters having some kind of degree, certificate or credential by 2025.
But a new report from Advance Vermont, which advocates for helping Vermonters attain education and skills of all kinds, shows that number stands at 59%.
Leaders say despite big investments in workforce programs, low-income Vermonters and Vermonters of color are falling through the cracks.
“It requires a big support network, it requires resources and privilege. What we need to do is make sure we are leveling the playing field for all Vermonters to make sure they can have equal access to that education and training but also make it through it,” said Tom Cheney, the executive director of Advance Vermont.
State lawmakers are expected to take up a slate of workforce-related bills this legislative session.
