WASHINGTON. (WCAX) – Vermont’s Congressional Delegation is weighing in on the latest budget battle, with funding for the U.S.-Mexico border and the Ukraine war in the mix.

Leaders in the U.S. House and Senate struck a tentative $1.7 trillion budget compromise, avoiding a government shutdown. Congressional Republicans want more funding for the southern border in exchange for military aid for Ukraine, a priority for some Democrats.

Representative Becca Balint and Senator Peter Welch told us they are still reviewing the spending plan.

“The fact that the two are tied together means that tough judgement will have to be made, but my hope is that in respect to border aid and Ukraine aid, we’re going to maintain our commitment to our state as a place that welcomes immigrants,” said Welch.

The House and Senate are considering the proposal in the coming days.
