ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – The Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital will soon be taking on a housing project.
The town of St. Johnsbury Monday approved a $100,000 grant to contribute to community housing for the hospital. Officials are planning to put apartment-style, single, and double-family homes off of Breezy Hill Road.
NVRH CEO Shawn Tester says the hospital has about 80 acres of undeveloped land and it is essential to have new housing as the hospital is short-staffed with about 50 nursing positions to fill but not enough housing in surrounding areas. “We are committed to serving the community’s needs. That means attracting physicians, attracting advanced practice providers. It’s attracting a nurse workforce. As the health care needs in this community grow, that means our workforce needs are growing at the same time,” he said.
Tester provided no estimated cost or timeline for the project.
