WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – A bigger space is on the way for an organization with big responsibilities. Waterbury EMS is moving to a new home that they say is a better fit for their team.

The current building in town was built in 1980 as a construction project by high school students. It lacks laundry and sleeping services with volunteers and staff responding to calls from their homes.

Executive Director Maggie Burke adds that if they were to buy a new ambulance, it wouldn’t fit in the building. “We’ve identified a place in town on Main Street in Waterbury and a demerit place. The building that we’re building is going to be about 6600 square feet. It’s gonna have a big public classroom as well as three bedrooms, space for laundry, a couple of offices. We’re not building something huge. We’re just building something that will meet our needs,” said Burke.

The team says the new location will be central to where they want to be. They’ve raised $3.2M from grants and donations and are working on getting more funding. The goal is to break ground in the spring and have the building completed by the winter.
