
PUTNEY, Vt. (WCAX) – A state lawmaker is calling the closure of the Putney Paper Mill shocking.
This week, the mill unexpectedly closed, laying off 127 people.
The paper mill is located in the center of town along the Sacketts Brook.
The Vermont Department of Labor is working to connect the laid-off workers with jobs.
About 2,000 live in Putney. State Rep. Michael Mrowicki says the closure will have a big impact on the town.
“They and their families are going to be going through some struggles. Any time you lose a job, it’s a huge shock and a transition. We want to make sure that the community is supportive, that what people need that they have access to,” said Mrowicki, D-Putney.
Soundview Holdings LLC said they will offer a severance package to employees.
Mrowicki says Putney Paper Mill was a generous organization in town, donating to the food shelf– making its closure even more of a surprise.
