COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Rescue crews rushed to Lake Champlain in Colchester Thursday morning for a report of people who fell through the ice trying to reach a stuck dog.

Police say the dog’s owners managed to get themselves out of the water before crews arrived. But rescuers put on their ice suits to get the trapped dog safely to shore.

Authorities say neither the dog nor any people were injured.

Colchester police warn that the ice in Malletts Bay and Niquette Bay is currently very thin. They say if you plan to go out on the ice, you should carry ice picks and have a floatation device, and be sure to let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
