WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCAX) – Monday is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a ruling that gave women the right to abortion until it was overturned in June of 2022. Now, Vermont senator Peter Welch is working with colleagues to protect reproductive rights.
According to Welch, almost 18 million women don’t have access to abortion care in their state since the Dobbs decision to overturn the right to an abortion. This Congress, Senate Democrats tried to pass four bills focusing on reproductive rights – all of which were blocked by senate republicans.
“As much as women who led the effort in Vermont to provide this right in Vermont, they don’t think the right to make this decision should depend on what zip code you live in or what state you live in,” Welch said, highlighting how Vermont enshrined reproductive rights into the state’s constitution.
He applauded the move from Vermont leaders to enshrine reproductive rights, but called for a federal standard. Senator Welch is a cosponsor of at least ten other bills targeting reproductive health.
