BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Winter can be a dangerous time for people with dementia who might wander in the cold or in dangerous areas.

Wandering is a common behavior in those with dementia. Experts say they are at high risk of wandering away or becoming lost or disoriented, They are may unable to remember how to get back home or know how, or who, to call for help. Add to that the dangers of sub-freezing weather or other concerns like thin ice.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America has a list of simple tips. They include safeguarding your home, being aware of your loved one’s patterns, and developing a safety plan.

Cat Viglienzoni spoke with the group’s Jennifer Reeder.
