BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The local teen who police say intentionally hit a man repeatedly with his car near Church St. two weeks ago is out of prison.
Superior Court Judge Kevin Griffin Tuesday decided that Hamza Velic, 18, of South Burlington will be on home detention with his parents while his case plays out in court.
Police say Velic made multiple attempts to strike Oliver Reed with his car after Reed had thrown a snowball at his car. During one of the attacks, a surveillance camera captured Velic’s car hitting Reed at the intersection of Church and Main Streets, sending him through the air and causing his pants to fly off. While Reed was regrouping, police say Velic doubled back and stuck him again. Velic has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
However, the public may never know the outcome of the case. Judge Griffin also approved a request to move the case into family court.
In the meantime, bail remains in place, which allows Velic to be arrested if he violates any of the conditions of home detention.
