WASHINGTON (WCAX) – A key federal gun control law is set to expire in just a few weeks.
The Undetectable Firearms Act was signed into law in 1988. It makes it illegal to manufacture or possess any firearm that is not detectable by a walk-through metal detector or x-ray and mandates every gun must have four ounces of metal in it. New York officials are concerned about what might happen if it’s not renewed.
“Extremely troubling to contemplate the idea that with all of the pressures that we’re having to deal with — firearms-related violence in our communities — that now we may have to deal with undetectable plastic weapons in our community as well,” Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins.
“You could be certain that if this law expires, that the likelihood of the number of gun crimes would go up,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York.
That legislation is set to expire on March 8.
