ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) – The man accused of a shooting in Swanton last fall will continue to be held behind bars.

Vermont State Police say Tyshane Smith, 21, shot Cooper Bergeron, 19, of Swanton, on October 7 during a drug deal.

Smith on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault and robbery.

He was on probation at the time of the shooting for charges connected to a shooting at the University Mall in 2021. Court paperwork shows he spent more than two years behind bars in that case before being released on probation.
