MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Hundreds gather in Montpelier to mobilize voters and demand state leaders take action to end poverty.
The crowd began at Montpelier Transit Center, marching onto State Street and the State House lawn. Vermont Poor People’s Campaign and movement leaders from across the state led the rally. They’re calling on Vermonters to support candidates who prioritize anti-poverty policy in November’s election.
“We will not accept more than 800 people dying every day from poverty in the richest country in the world,” Kate Kanelstein with Vermont Poor People’s Campaign said to the crowd.
The rally is one of dozens taking place across the country, kicking off 40 weeks of action leading up to the election. Poor and low-income Vermonters make up over 31% of the state, according to the Vermont Poor People’s Campaign.
