BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Progressive Emma Mulvaney-Stanak has won the race for Burlington mayor, becoming the first woman elected to the post in the city’s history, and putting Progressives back in charge after more than a decade.
Mulvaney-Stanak spent many years as a community and labor organizer, which she says will allow her to bring the people most impacted by the issues to the table. She also served on the City Council for two terms and now represents Burlington’s Chittenden-17 District in the Vermont House. She also previously served as the chair of the Vermont Progressive Party.
Mulvaney-Stanak beat out Democrat Joan Shannon and independent candidates Will Emmons and Chris Haessly.
Mulvaney-Stanak had 7,612 votes or 51.4% and Shannon got 6,696 or 45.2%. Because Mulvaney-Stanak surpassed the 50% vote threshold, ranked-choice rules do not apply.
