BURLINGTON Vt. (WCAX) – The man accused in a deadly hit-and-run in South Burlington over the weekend faced a judge on Wednesday.

Steven Olango, 38, of South Burlington, pleaded not guilty to negligent driving and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Court paperwork says that on Saturday night, Olango hit Joseph Byrd Allen, 73, of Shelburne, who was riding a bike on Shelburne Road.

Police later arrested Olango after finding the suspected Mini Cooper from the crash at the Travel Lodge in South Burlington.

Police say Olango’s license was suspended at the time of the crash, his registration was expired and he was under the influence.

Byrd Allen, also known as Byrdman, was a fixture in the Burlington area, known for pushing decorated carts and bikes around town.
