MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Governor Phil Scott says Vermonters should expect more than 100,000 people to travel to the state for next week’s total solar eclipse.

Along with the expected influx of visitors comes public safety risks. State leaders are urging people to make a plan if they leave their homes and expect traffic jams to potentially take hours. They are also cautioning people to avoid trails and muddy roads after this week’s snowstorm.

“Vermonters should expect a lot of traffic through this weekend through Monday and possibly Tuesday, so please plan accordingly and use common sense. Think of this as peak foliage weekend on steroids,” Scott said Wednesday.

The eclipse is expected to bring in upwards of $50 million in tourism revenue. Leaders are encouraging businesses to stay open and welcome visitors, hoping will make memories and return to the Green Mountains.
