BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A sinkhole closed a busy street in downtown Burlington on Wednesday.

Burlington Public Works said the sinkhole formed near the intersection of Church and Bank streets thanks to a break in a 130-year-old pipe. They said the same pipe previously broke back in 2011.

They expected to have the road back up and operational by Wednesday night.

“So, be in the five figures, maybe $20,000 rough estimate. We will have it repaired by tonight. This will not affect the eclipse or any of this weekend’s activities downtown,” said Chapin Spencer of Burlington Public Works.

The city has a grant to rehab several portions of downtown streets over the next few years, including this area, with new infrastructure so this will not happen in the future.
