MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont College of Fine Arts announced on Tuesday it will become an affiliate of the California Institute of the Arts.
The Montpelier-based grad school says on its website that the deal means that while CalArts will become VCFA’s “parent,” the school will retain its academic independence, and administrative offices in Montpelier while benefiting from the California school’s financial stability and academic offerings.
The move is the latest consolidation effort for the 16-year-old school, which two years ago moved all of its residency programs to Colorado College and has since been selling off its property on College Hill.
Vermont in recent years has faced a wave of college closures including Green Mountain College in Poultney and Southern Vermont College in Bennington. Goddard College in nearby Plainfield, announced in January that it would also end all Vermont residency programs.
