BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont officials Wednesday highlighted ongoing efforts being taken to prevent child abuse in the state.

Officials with the UVM Health Network and Department for Children and Families were among those marking Child Abuse Prevention Month by sharing stories and planting a pinwheel garden outside the UVM Medical Center representing the innocence and joy all children should grow up with.

“It’s both heartbreaking and it’s infuriating. It also serves as motivation to do that prevention work and take action to protect the most innocent to victims in the face of that darkness,” said DCF Commissioner Chris Winters.

Hundreds of thousands of children are victims of child abuse every year in the U.S. People can report child abuse or neglect by calling: 1-800-649-5285.
