BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The tens of thousands of visitors who came to our region to get a glimpse of the total solar eclipse are now headed home, and some roads across the region are backing up.

After the eclipse was over, Interstate 89 near Burlington backed up really quickly. The Waze traffic app estimated that driving from South Burlington to Richmond would take a half hour.

During totality the roads were completely empty, but as soon as it was over, travelers started flooding out of downtown Burlington.

VTrans says for traffic updates, you can use things like Vermont Emergency Management, Google Maps, 511 New England, VT-ALERT or download the Waze app to your phone.

Many folks we talked to said they expected traffic for their ride home and filled up on gas ahead of time, packed plenty of snacks and water ahead of time.

Farther down the road, as of about 5 p.m., traffic on Interstate 89 southbound in Waterbury was moving smoothly.
