BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – We are learning new details about what led to the arrest of an alleged arsonist who is accused of trying to torch Sen. Bernie Sanders’ office in downtown Burlington.

Federal authorities arrested Shant Michael Soghomonian, 35, on Sunday, charging him in connection with the fire.

According to federal court documents, authorities were contacted by the manager of the Inn at Burlington, telling them he recognized the man pictured in surveillance photos, and Soghomonian had been staying there for several weeks.

Police were able to match photos from the scene to surveillance photos at the hotel.

Soghomonian was arrested in a hotel room at the Quality Inn in Shelburne at 4 a.m. Sunday by Williston police.

Court paperwork did not detail a possible motive.

A federal court date for Soghomonian has not yet been set.
