COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Callers who claim to be sheriff’s deputies have targeted multiple people in our region this week saying they face arrest, but the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Office says it’s all a scam.
The imposters claim arrest warrants have been issued for the victims for missing jury duty or being late on PPE loans. The calls appear to come from an 802 area code and use the names of actual deputies, but authorities say it’s a hoax.
The real deputies warn victims not to provide any personal information and to hang up. They say you can report incidents like these to the Attorney General’s Office at 800-649-2424 or 802-656-3183, and you can contact the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Office at 802-863-4341 if you have questions.
Deputies say they have not had reports of anyone who has fallen victim to the scam.
