MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – An effort continues to incorporate more Holocaust education in Vermont classrooms.

The Vermont Holocaust Memorial and Jewish Vermonters Friday joined some lawmakers to push for two bills that have been languishing in the House and Senate since last year. They say Vermont is the only state in New England that does not have any legislated holocaust education.

“The fact that it’s not required to be taught in the state actually really scares me. We have students who are growing up who have never heard of it. They don’t understand how bad the world can get when democracy is sidelined,” said the memorial’s Heidi Fishman.

The two bills introduced last session — H.294 and S.87 — would mandate six hours of Holocaust education per year for students in grades six through 12.
