
WESTPORT, N.Y, Vt. (WCAX) – Essex County, New York, health officials are reporting the first case of rabies for the year.
They say a skunk picked up as roadkill at the end of March in the town of Westport tested positive for the virus.
Last year saw 13 cases, the highest number since 2019, according to the Essex County Health Department.
They recommend keeping livestock and pets up to date with rabies vaccines, tightly cap garbage cans or other food sources from wild animals, and keep an eye on your pets while they’re outside.
