BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont health officials say they are investigating a measles exposure among a group of over two dozen people who are part of an international program.

The Vermont Department of Health says the 18 teenagers and eight adults were exposed to an unvaccinated person with a confirmed case of measles while traveling to the U.S. They say there are no confirmed cases currently in Vermont.

State health officials are working with the individuals to obtain vaccination records and test for the virus. The group is quarantining and officials say the risk of transmission to members of the public is low.

The highly infectious respiratory virus can be prevented with the MMR vaccine. It was recently thought to be nearly eliminated in the U.S., with the last confirmed case in 2018. But For the first three months of 2024, the CDC reported more than 100 cases of measles and seven outbreaks in the U.S.
