BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Bennington residents are joining together – hoping to present the need for warming and cooling shelters during cases of severe weather in the town.

Bennington Organizing and Action – a chapter of Vermont Interfaith Action – says they’re presenting research on severe weather preps in the city and how it impacts vulnerable populations.

The chapter is calling on the selectboard and police chief to improve and expand their current response to severe weather and to get commitments from town officials to include plans at the next selectboard meeting.

“Understand what are the current procedures in place for local resilience, now that we’re seeing more of these kind of extreme weather events, both hot and cold, and what we as citizens can do to be part of the conversation, as these local plans are being developed, Bennington Organizing and Action volunteer Jack Rossiter-Munley said.

“A lot of folks, particularly if they have health problems, need somewhere to go during this weather so they can actually survive it.” Mary Gerisch from Bennington Organizing and Action said.

Multiple other interfaith organizations and community action groups will be holding a press conference Sunday from six to seven at the second congregational church.
