PERU, N.Y. (WCAX) – Volunteers with a New York animal shelter say at least 18 dogs seized from a North Country rescue operation have been adopted and no longer have to call the Clinton County Jail home.

The dogs were taken in February from a Canine Gem in Beekmantown due to malnourishment and an alleged lack of treatment.

The Elmore SPCA took custody of the dogs while they are housed in an empty portion of the county’s jail. The shelter is hosting meet and greets in the jail’s parking lot for people interested in adopting one of the pups. However, some dogs that have heartworm disease may need to be relocated to their shelter.

“We are hoping to get them to the shelter and settled before their injections so they can really be the four of them together in quiet to receive the care that they need,” said Rebecca Patnode, the executive director of the Elmore SPCA.

The roughly 30 dogs still at the jail will remain there until more room is available at the SPCA’s shelter in Peru.

The owner of a Canine Gem, Hilary Davis, was charged last month with nearly 50 counts including animal abuse, failure to provide proper food and shelter, and forging documents related to the animals.
