WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCAX) – One lawmaker is making sure your snail mail isn’t slower than expected.
In a Senate hearing, New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan raised concerns about the USPS plan to consolidate mail processing facilities in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Hassan said that her constituents are already complaining about mail service problems, and the plan to move the Manchester processing facility to Boston will only make those issues worse.
She said it could result in some postal workers losing their jobs, impact the timeliness of absentee ballot delivery, and impact access to medications. She specifically mentioned the White River Junction processing facility.
“For Granite Staters in the North Country in particular, the Postal Service is a lifeline…The postal service remains particularly important up there, especially when you’re talking about the delivery of medication and essential goods,” said Hassan.
According to Hassan, USPS has plans to move White River’s processing facility to a location 150 miles away in Hartford, Connecticut.
Hassan raised concerns about potentially taking local employees out of the equation, saying their knowledge of their own communities is vital.
