BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Construction for the new Burlington High School is on schedule for a fall 2026 opening. With the demolition of the old, PCB-laden building wrapping up, district officials say they’re looking forward to the next phase of the project.

“We’ve got the concrete foundations starting to rise up out of the out of the demolition. So yeah, we’re in a really exciting point,” said Burlington School District Superintendent Tom Flanagan.

He says they are nearly done with all remediation of the PCBs, which delayed the project initially. “We’re headed into a phase of building and there’s still some remediation work that’s happening, but that is almost all completely behind us at this point, and looking forward to the building now,” Flanagan said.

They are also on track budget-wise after voters approved a $165 million bond measure last November. The district and its construction manager also identified nearly $4 million in extra savings and secured over $1 million from Senator Peter Welch for a stormwater grant.

“We’re continuing to seek funding, working to make sure that we provide the type of building that our community deserves and has asked for and supported all along, and also reducing the impact on taxpayers as much as we possibly can,” Flanagan said.

After pouring the concrete foundation wraps up, the steel will be added, providing a clearer vision of what the new high school might look like for the next several decades of students.
