MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Governor Phil Scott remains America’s most popular governor, according to a new poll conducted by Morning Consult.
It shows 81% of poll respondents approve of Scott — 10 percentage points ahead of Wyoming Republican Governor Mark Gordon. New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu comes in as the third most popular.
Bert Johnson, a political science professor at Middlebury College, says Scott is in line with public opinion, which improves his approval rating. “The ACLU position is — we can afford higher taxes on higher income people in order to provide more services to Vermonters. That’s not Scott’s position. By holding his line on this, he improves his ranking with Vermont voters,” Johnson said.
A separate poll from the University of New Hampshire shows a majority of Vermonters want Scott to seek re-election. The same poll shows overall reelection support for Senator Bernie Sanders — and Representative Becca Balint.
Neither Scott nor Sanders have announced their reelection plans.
