LEBANON, N.H. (WCAX) – A methane capture project at an Upper Valley landfill is back on track after unintended delays.

The $6-million project at the Lebanon landfill will include five microturbines that will produce roughly a megawatt of power from the methane gas that is currently being flared off at the facility. A national grid study of the power that will be produced delayed the project, but officials say construction is now scheduled to begin in about a month.

“That is energy that we are creating anyway. It’s here, we are able to convert it from the methane gas so it’s doing something good with something that coming out of our landfill,” said Lebanon Solid Waste Superintendent Erica Douglas.

City officials say not only will the project reduce the city’s carbon footprint but it will also eventually pay for itself with the revenue generated from sending power back to the grid.
