RUTLAND TOWN, Vt. (WCAX) – Over 50 kindergartners and first graders at Rutland Town School graduated Friday from the Drug Awareness Resistance Education program.

While the younger students weren’t learning about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse, the DARE program teaches about good decision-making and consequences.

“Probably just learning about DARE and what you can see and do to make yourself safe,” said Evelyn, a first-grader.

First graders and Kindergarteners soak up the information like sponges, so they retain. They come back to me a couple years later and retain and tell me what they learned in DARE. It’s phenomenal,” said Antje Schermerhorn, Rutland Town’s SRO.

School officials say they got donations from local businesses to help put on the course and graduation.
