Winooski’s bargain real estate attracted diverse residents. Now they’re being squeezed out

WINOOSKI, Vt. (WCAX) – Winooski’s modest homes and lower rents have long attracted first-time homebuyers and low-income families.

The supply of relatively cheap apartments large enough to accommodate families with several children also made the city a convenient location for resettlement agencies to place refugees from Africa and South Asia. But in recent years, rents and property values have soared, spurring concerns that gentrification is undermining the city’s inclusivity.
