MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Turtles are on the move, and Vermont Fish and Wildlife says they need your help to stay safe.
Biologists say female turtles will lay their eggs soon and they sometimes choose dangerous locations for their nesting sites. That includes road shoulders, parking lots and driveways.
Drivers are urged to keep an eye out for turtles on Vermont roadways, especially near ponds, rivers and wetlands.
If you encounter a turtle, the department asks that you give it a hand if you can, and move it off the roadway in the direction it was traveling. They say most turtles can be picked up by hand, except snapping turtles. If you come across a snapper, you can try moving it with a shovel or pulling it across the road on a piece of cardboard a floor mat.
Turtle nesting activity peaks between late May and mid-June.
