KILLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – We introduced you to a group of friends at Killington last spring holding their annual “Dual Day” — skiing and wake surfing in the same day. This year, they upped the ante.
With 47-degree water and air temperatures in the mid-50s, Monday was a perfect day to hit New Hampshire’s North Hampton Beach for a sunrise surf. It was Adam Smith’s idea, though he did have second thoughts after talking to his buddy.
“‘You know, the weather doesn’t look so good. What do you think?’ And he said, ‘If we don’t do it this year, we will only be one year older when we do.’ And that is a quote by Warren Miller,” said Smith of Waterford, New York.
From the ocean surf to the Vermont ski slopes, Smith and his lifelong friend Bryon Knight made the trek to Killington’s Superstar trail for the second leg of their trifecta.
“A lot of people that do a trifecta in California where they snowboard, and they surf and they skateboard, but we didn’t find anything for the East Coast so we just thought it would be kind of fun to try it,” Smith said.
Then, from spring snow to Ballston Lake in upstate New York, the final piece of their outdoor adventure. They documented their journey along the way, joined by other friends for various legs.
“Well, it’s kind of surreal right?” Smith said.
I met the Dual Day group last year when only skiing and wake surfing were in the cards. They added the ocean this year, simply because they can.
“The juxtaposition is kind of what makes it all that much fun,” Smith said.
Knight wasn’t available for an interview on Monday. Yes, these guys do have day jobs. That is when they are not on the water, bouncing through moguls or catching that early morning set.
“People need to just understand what’s available to you out there and find your own adventure. Go get it. That is what it is all about. You know, this was our trifecta but everybody can have their own,” Smith said.
The group is looking to recruit more people for next year’s trifecta and they’ve already renamed the event “From Ocean to Slope to Rope.”
