RUTLAND CITY, Vt. (WCAX) – The unofficial results are in for the next barre city mayor. Former mayor Thomas Lauzon has won his old job back.
Lauzon beat out city councilor Samn Stockwell in a 902 to 645 vote.
Lauzon was mayor from 2006 to 2018 and says the flooding in the city pushed him towards leadership once again.
While most Vermonters voted in new mayors in March, Barre City held off until now due to flood-related delays. Some Barre voters say they voted to ensure the community’s future as flood restoration continues.
“I’m hoping to see that everyone who lives in our community is heard… and that people who want to stay in their homes are able to fix their homes and stay here,” said Barre resident Bern Rose.
Lauzon says he wants to prioritize a flood relief plan while in office, for which Barre residents would cover $100,000. This would lay the groundwork for a $50 million project promoted by Governor Phil Scott to restore the city’s north end.
