NEW YORK (WCAX) – New York Governor Kathy Hochul Tuesday highlighted the state’s generous paid parental leave program.
Speaking at the Mom’s First Summit in New York Tuesday, Hochul said the Empire State goes further than any other state in making sure expecting parents can get their health care needs without risking their jobs. In addition to the state’s 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, Hochul said New York is the first state to offer 20 hours of paid pre-natal leave.
The governor said that for some communities, pregnancy can be a death sentence and that the U.S. has the worst statistics when it comes to childbirth out of any other wealthy nation worldwide.
“Lower wage, minimum wage, hourly workers – you take that time off to go to your doctor visit, to have an investment in your health and the health of your baby, then you’re losing money that you need. That takes a hit on your pocketbook,” Hochul said.
Hochul also emphasized the importance of doulas, family leave after childbirth, and affordable child care. She said they all play a role in helping parents get back to work after having a baby.
