BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Governor Kathy Hochul is waking up overseas, but her thoughts are on the Empire State – with a focus on going green.

While visiting the Vatican, Hochul announced a nearly $300 million investment into climate resilience. She was there for a three-day climate summit hosted by the Pope.

The money will go to grants dedicated to protecting communities from the impacts of climate change.

She emphasized the climate catastrophes that have hit New York, even in the 3 years she’s been in office.

“But we have that same sense of urgency today. It drives us every day of our lives to know that we have a moral responsibility to our children and grandchildren to not just protect earth, but build the resiliency that’s required to head off all those storms. And I would say between California and New York, we have been beaten with extreme weather. Our lakes and streams upstate, where people have drowned, flooded in their homes. Extreme heat, hottest temperatures we’ve ever had in our history,” said Hochul.

She specifically highlighted the need to help areas that are most vulnerable to impacts like pollution, flooding, and extreme heat.
