HARTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – A Hartland home break-in has community members puzzled and police asking for the public’s help.

Police say sometime between May 9th and 16th broke into a home on Route 5 while the homeowners were out of town. They say the suspect then made a meal, slept in a bed, and left without taking anything.

Authorities urge the public to take precautions, including giving neighbors access to your home if you plan to be away for long periods.

“In this particular case, they had neighbors checking, but it was more the outside of the house. And you really had to have a keen eye to realize someone entered the house. And then using modern technology — this day and age you can go out and purchase pretty inexpensive surveillance systems,” said Vermont State Police Sgt. Max Trenosky.

Police say they are following a few leads in the case.
