BURKE, Vt. (WCAX) – Town officials in Burke are preparing to launch their new rental registry.

It’s meant to keep track of the number of short and long-term rental properties in town.

Starting July 1st, owners of short-term units, like Airbnbs, need to pay $45 per unit annually, while owners of long-term rentals will pay $35. Each will also need to show proof of a development review board permit.

Burke Town Administrator Jim Sullivan says he believes this was a good compromise.

“There were some that were not fully opposed, but I think they felt like there may be some restrictions. We tried not to do that. We really wanted to go into this soft. Make it simply a registration, very much like the way you register your dog each year,” said Sullivan.

If property owners don’t get on the registry after a year, they will be fined $100 a day until they do.
