LEBANON, N.H. (WCAX) – Lebanon officials held a groundbreaking Tuesday morning for a long-anticipated methane capture project at the city’s landfill.
The $6 million project includes the construction of five microturbines that will produce roughly a megawatt of power from the methane gas that is currently being flared off at the facility.
City officials have said the project will not only reduce the city’s carbon footprint but it will also eventually pay for itself with the revenue generated from sending power back to the grid. They say an onsite charging station is also being built.
“If there is an extended power outage, we can charge electric vehicles for the city’s fleet. The city is slowly going to be adding more and more electric vehicles and this will give us a way to be more resilient in the face of potential extended power outages in the future,” said Lebanon City Councilor Clifton Below.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
