BRIGHTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The Island in Island Pond is now officially part of Brighton State Park.

Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation officials on Wednesday announced they have purchased the 15-acre Northeast Kingdom island for $1.1 million with support from the Vermont Land Trust and other groups.

The island, which features a red pine forest and is a prime habitat for bald eagles, is protected by a conservation easement that permanently protects public access and natural resources.

The department said the island will remain open to the public and continue to contribute to the local economy.
