COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Two people are dead and three others are detained after a high-speed police chase ends with a bad crash in Colchester.

Police say the pursuit started after an incident in Burlington where four people threatened owners of a rental car company at gunpoint when they were trying to recover their vehicle.

Burlington police tried to stop the car involved, but they sped off. The chase continued into Colchester, where police there joined the pursuit, before the car crashed, flipping over on East Lakeshore Drive.

Two people died as a result of this crash, the other three people in the car were detained and taken to UVM Medical Center.

“When we went to try to take those individuals into custody and make that car stop, it did flee. At that point, a pursuit did ensue in Burlington. It led straight to the Beltline. It reached very high speeds and our officers called it off. Before they did so, however, they had put out a BOL or ‘be on the lookout’ with other agencies, including South Burlington, including our great partners in Colchester. Once that vehicle hit the Colchester line our officers pulled back,” said Burlington police Chief Jon Murad.

“So our officers met that vehicle and then pursuit continued to Colchester from West Lake Shore Drive onto East Lake Shore Drive, and it resulted in a crash,” said Colchester Police Chief Peter Hull.

The scene of the crash is still active as of the time this article was posted, and police say the investigation into this incident is still in its earliest stages.
