STRAFFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – Residents in Strafford will head to the polls Monday for a million-dollar decision on whether to renovate and expand the town’s historic town office building.

A Town Office Committee was formed a couple of years ago after the town rejected a previous vote to buy a nearby house and turn it into the town offices. The current 150-year-old building is about half the space town officials need for day-to-day business.

“The board of listers, the auditor, the treasure — all these people need a place to work and a decent size meeting room. If you‘ve been in that office, you know how small the meeting room is. Once you have eight people there, it’s crowded and there are some code issues that need to be dealt with,” said the committee’s Curt Albee.

The fire marshall has determined the 2nd floor is currently off-limits so the lister’s office has been relocated to the old fire station.
