ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – Getting outside just got easier for every New Yorker thanks to new accessibility updates.

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation just announced a new map of accessible recreation features, as well as the completion of more than $5 million in upgrades.

The accessible recreation designation map shows wheelchair-accessible features at campgrounds, water access sites, trails, and other day-use locations.

Both changes are meant to better the experience for people with disabilities, using the DEC’s land to ensure people of all ages and abilities can enjoy nature.

“New Yorkers can explore more than 260 different facilities across the state that have accessible recreation features. It includes things like accessible boating, fishing, campsites, hiking trails, beach access routes, and picnic facilities,” said Adriana Espinoza, DEC Deputy Commissioner for Equity and Justice.

Newly completed accessibility projects are opening across New York state, including new accessible bathrooms at Meacham Lake Campground in Franklin County.

This weekend, the DEC is holding events to get New Yorkers outside.

In the north country, there will be an event at the Ausable Point campground on Saturday.
