Report: Effort to provide free meals to Burlington mayor raises controversy

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Dinner donations are causing controversy in the Queen City. Vermont Freelance Reporter Mike Donoghue reports that a special food drive was started to provide free meals to Burlington’s mayor and her wife to reduce the stress of being public servants.

Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak’s wife is the city’s water director. Combined, Donoghue reports the couple makes $250,000 a year.

People were encouraged to sign up to provide the free dinners through MealTrain.com, which is typically reserved for people experiencing hardship.

WCAX News is working to get a comment from the mayor and we’re looking into whether it violates any ethics policies. We will update you when we know more.
