BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Green Mountain Transit is adding five new electric buses to its fleet. That’s in addition to two already in service. Altogether, it means about 10% of GMT buses in the Chittenden County area will be electric.
The buses were purchased using Burlington Electric Department incentives and state and federal grants.
Each bus will reduce GMT’s diesel consumption by 5,000 gallons a year.
“Just these five should take about a half a percent off of our transportation emissions in the city. And it’s not often that we have that kind of a tangible impact with one announcement because it’s very hard to reduce emissions, and so we’re really proud to be able to see these buses joining the fleet,” said Darren Springer of the Burlington Electric Department.
GMT says riders on electric buses should notice no difference except a quieter trip.
