ENOSBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) – Residents in the Enosburgh-Richford Unified Union School District are facing a 3rd budget vote on Tuesday.
The $23 million spending plan has been reduced by about $900,000 since Town Meeting Day. The district, which includes Enosburg High School, Richford High School, Enosburg Elementary, and Richford Elementary, already has one of the lowest spending levels per student in the state. If the district does not pass a budget by July 1, they can borrow up to 87 percent of last year’s budget — and pay interest on it — while they keep trying to get a budget passed.
More than two dozen districts defeated budgets this year in the face of a double-digit increase in statewide property taxes and several needed multiple revotes. State lawmakers during a veto session last week overrode the governor’s veto of the yield bill which sets property taxes. It also contains provisions for a study on the future of education spending.
