ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – One man is facing charges after driving the wrong way on Interstate 91.
Around 8 p.m. on Sunday, Vermont State Police responded to a report of a car driving southbound in northbound lanes on I-91 in St. Johnsbury.
Police say they turned on their lights and sirens when they approached the car near Exit 21, but the suspect continued driving south at a high speed.
They say the responding trooper was forced to merge from the left lane into the right lane to avoid a head-on collision with the driver, whose car came within feet of hitting the police cruiser.
As the driver continued south, he merged onto the Exit 21 North on-ramp, where he began driving west in the eastbound lane of Route 2. Responding troopers were able to stop the car on the Route 2/I-91 overpass.
The driver was identified as 56-year-old David Capaccioli of Plainfield.
Troopers observed signs of impairment and took Capaccioli into custody.
He is due in court on July 8.
