Maritime Museum exhibit chronicles history of canal boats

VERGENNES, Vt. (WCAX) – A new exhibit at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum explores the history of canal boats on the lake.

“Underwater Archaeology: Diving Into the Stories of People and Canal Boats on Lake Champlain” showcases artifacts from the canal boats that ferried passengers up the lake, it also aims to give visitors a glimpse into what life was like for the families on those boats during the 19th century.

“It’s really fascinating that these boats were often owned and operated by a family unit and therefore you not only had the men operating the vessel but you often had their wives and children living on the boat with them,” said the museum’s Chris Sabick.

There is a preview party on Friday. The exhibit opens on July 13 and is free that day. It runs through October 20.
